Dayton Mini Market deemed total loss after fire

DAYTON, VA (Rocktown Now) – The Dayton Mini Market – a staple business in the historic downtown area – has been deemed a total loss after a structure fire burned the building Wednesday morning.

According to Rockingham County Fire Chief Jeremy Holloway, the call came in shortly before 3 a.m. Upon arrival, Fire & Rescue crews tried to contain the fire.

However, the crews had to pull out of the building as the floors had become unstable.

Holloway added that the neighboring Dayton Tavern sustained minimal damage. No injuries were reported.

All roads in Dayton reopened around 11 a.m. Crews remained on scene throughout the rest of the day to investigate the cause of the fire.

Holloway said crews were able to evacuate all occupants and removed get some items from the building. No injuries have been reported.

“Right now, the building is not occupiable, and we won’t be going into the building,” Holloway said. “We’re working with insurance company because we got to get some heavy equipment in here to remove some stuff that’s kind of hindering our process of investigation. So, right now, we’re waiting on that to get here, and personnel are continuing to investigate and look into the cause of the fire.”
