MOUNT CRAWFORD VA: (Rocktown Now) The Harrisonburg Rockingham Relay for Life brought hundreds of community members together Saturday evening at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds for a night centered on remembrance, resilience, and community spirit. This year’s theme, “Festival of Hope,” set the tone for an event that blended heartfelt reflection with lively entertainment, all in support of the American Cancer Society.
Guest speaker Joyce Sampson-Franklin delivered one of the evening’s most powerful messages. She spoke about returning to Harrisonburg to help care for her father, Ralph Sampson Sr. and the lessons she learned throughout his long struggle with illness. Franklin described how she and her siblings worked together to provide round‑the‑clock care, scheduling medical appointments and sharing responsibilities to ease the burden on their mother. Her story, rooted in love, duty, and perseverance, resonated deeply with the audience and reflected the spirit of the Relay for Life mission.
The evening also featured the traditions that define Relay for Life events across the country. The “Survivors Walk” honored those who have fought or continue to fight cancer, while the “Luminaria Ceremony” offered a solemn moment of remembrance for loved ones lost and those still battling the disease. These moments brought participants together in reflection and solidarity, reinforcing the purpose behind the night’s efforts.
Despite the emotional weight of the ceremonies, the “Festival of Hope” theme ensured that the event also celebrated life and community. Attendees enjoyed activities ranging from line dancing and a food‑eating contest to axe throwing. DJ Chris Chapman kept the energy high throughout the evening with upbeat music that encouraged people to dance, mingle, and enjoy the festivities.
As of Saturday night, the event had raised over $135,000 to support the American Cancer Society. According to volunteer chair Dee Dee Sencindiver, herself a cancer survivor, the funds not only support vital research but also help local cancer patients with practical needs such as gas and transportation to treatment appointments. She emphasized that the impact of these donations is felt directly within the Harrisonburg and Rockingham communities.
