JMU Baseball lets series finale slip away at Georgia State, 5-4

ATLANTA (JMU Athletics) – Four unearned runs pushed Georgia State ahead of James Madison, as the Dukes fell, 5-4, in Sun Belt Conference baseball on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Dukes fell to 16-18 (6-9 Sun Belt), while the Panthers improved to 18-19 (7-8 Sun Belt).

Three Dukes had a pair of hits each in junior Kyle Langley, redshirt sophomore Clay Thompson and freshman Cameron Aycock. Langley contributed a run scored and Thompson had an RBI.

How It Happened
Third Inning
The Dukes got on the board first with a single from Thompson that drove in senior Jack Cannizzaro from second.

Fifth Inning
A walk and two singles load the bases for sophomore Reece Moody, who stepped up and singled in two runs to give JMU a 3-0 lead.

Sixth Inning
GSU got on the board with a two-out double, making it 3-1.

Seventh Inning
An error on the Dukes allowed three unearned runs to score, as the Panthers made it a one-run game on a single and then tied it and took a 4-3 lead on two wild pitches.

Eighth Inning
JMU responded with a run in the eighth, loading the bases and then scoring on a passed ball to tie the game at four.

With two outs in the bottom half of the inning, an arrant throw from shortstop allowed the Panthers to regain the lead at 5-4.

Game Notes
• With Clay Thompson’s 20th stolen base, he joins Reece Moody as the first JMU pair with 20 stolen bases each since 2011.
• Tyler Lutz went a season-high 5.2 innings on the mound.

The Dukes return to Veterans Memorial Park on Tuesday, April 14 to host Richmond for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
