HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison Head Field Hockey Coach Christy Morgan has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping her in Harrisonburg through the 2027 season.
“We’re excited to extend Christy through the 2027 season and for her to continue leading our field hockey program,” JMU Director of Athletics Matt Roan said. “After two seasons competing as an independent, JMU made a strong debut in the MAC, winning a regular-season title and clinching hosting rights for the 2025 MAC Championship. Christy is a member of five Hall of Fames, including the JMU Athletics and USA Field Hockey, and has incredible passion for her sport. She’s been a winner her entire career, and we’re looking forward to more still to come with her leading the Dukes.”
Coach Morgan recently completed her 20th season overall, and her 11th season in her second stint with the program. This past season, her squad finished 14-6 overall with a 7-1 mark in Mid-American Conference play, clinching a share of the MAC regular-season title. Morgan was voted the 2025 MAC Coach of the Year, while Alice Roeper was named the league’s Player of the Year.
“I’m super excited to have the opportunity to continue to coach, at what I believe, is the absolute best place for me,” said Morgan. “This university lives by the same values and character that I believe in. We are able to attract amazing people to compete at the highest level. I’d like to thank President Charlie King, Director of Athletics Matt Roan, and Sport Administrator Stephen LaPorta for believing in me and for celebrating the success of the program. Being back in a conference has ignited me and my players. We have big goals and I’m glad I get to lead this team to a special place. In her time at JMU, Morgan has guided the Dukes to a 245-150-2 (.620) record. Since returning to the helm of the program in 2014, JMU has appeared in four conference championship games.
A native of Norristown, Pa., Morgan captured three national championships as a player at Old Dominion (1982-84) before leading James Madison to the school’s first NCAA title as a head coach in 1994.
Morgan is set to be inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame this fall. She is already a member of the Old Dominion Sports Hall of Fame (1990), USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame (2004), JMU Athletics Hall of Fame (2004) and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2023).
