HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – No. 9 Duke scored in each quarter to come away with a 5-0 win over No. 19 James Madison in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Blue Devils (7-4, 2-2 ACC) held an advantage in shots (15-5), shots on goal (10-2) and penalty corners (7-3) to hand the Dukes (8-5, 3-1 MAC) their first home loss of the season.
Goalkeeper Molly Schreiner tallied five saves in the game’s first three quarters, with Hannah Popolis coming in for the final period.
For Duke, Julia Boehringer recorded a brace and Alaina McVeigh added a goal and an assist to pace the Blue Devils’ offense. Lily Soldan and Macy Szukics also found the back of the net, while Maggie Kondrath, Paige Bitting and Brynn Crouse added assists.
Netminder Kaiya Chepow notched the win, making one save in 45:00 of action. Brooke Borzymowski swatted away one shot in the fourth quarter.
How It Happened
• Juliette Schulten sent in a pass that was deflected by McVeigh and swatted in by Boehringer less than three minutes into the contest.
• Early in the second, Schulten was taken down in the circle, leading to a penalty stroke that was converted by McVeigh to give Duke a 2-0 lead.
• With 1:34 remaining in the first half, Boehringer scored on a direct shot off a penalty corner, with assists from Kondrath and Bitting.
• In the final minute of the third, Soldan took a reverse shot on the left side of the circle that snuck between the pads of Schreiner to make it 4-0 Duke entering the fourth.
• The ninth-ranked Blue Devils cashed in on another penalty corner with 6:59 to play, with the insertion from Crouse to Szukics, whose shot was partially tipped by a JMU defender.
Game Notes
• The result marked JMU’s first time being shut out at home since last season when Cal blanked the Dukes 3-0 on Sept. 22.
• Additionally, the loss was James Madison’s first by five or more goals since 2023 when No. 14 Boston College posted a 7-0 win over the Dukes on Sept. 17.
• JMU did not register a penalty corner or shot in the first half.
